I just finished watching the movie Deadgirl and I really liked it. It was an original take on on the zombie/vampire genre. In this age of sequels and remakes it was refreshing to see something new.

That being said it was a pretty sick and twisted movie. If you like horror with a bit of social commentary check it out.

If you are looking for another movie that will challenge your perceptions of the horror genre you should also check out KatieBird *Certifiable Crazy Person.

Finally, another movie I saw recently but which you should avoid is Feed. Interesting concept on the serial killer sub-genre but totally ridiculous.

So I have been hearing for years that this was one of the hardest movies to watch, a real horror show as Alex DeLarge would say. Well I finally watched it tonight and thought it was totally tame and stupid. The actors are not convincing and the music is horrible. I just don’t get what the big deal is.

I must be completely desensitized…wait, I am not the only one:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068833/board/nest/133875876?d=133875876&p=1#133875876

Movies that, for me, were harder to watch (but I still liked!):

The Devil’s Rejects

One of my all time favorite “hard scifi” movies is 1974′s Phase IV available on Amazon. What I mean by “hard scifi” is it only takes a little bit of suspension of disbelief to really think it could happen. Think Andromeda Strain or Colossus: The Forbin Project.

The movie starts out with a simple explanation that some astrological event happens and scientists wonder what will happen to the planet. Something small does happen instead of something big. Ants. Ants become more intelligent. They begin to behave differently. Two scientists are tasked with studying the problem using computers and crypto analysis.

The movie is filled with beautiful macro photography of ants working against the humans. Stuff like infiltrating the AC so the computers can only work at night. Bringing bits of poison to the queen so the next generation of ants is immune. And finally communicating using geometry!

On the advice of a friend I picked up a new DVD player this weekend. Up till this point I have been using my PS/2. I recently downloaded some videos from the internet and and a heck of a time transcoding them to DVD. I tried twice on my PC and finally succeeded on my MAC.

My friend at work explained that new DVD players could play PC/MAC videos burned on a disc.

I got the Toshiba SD-3990 from the evil empire (no not Microsoft – Best Buy).

Sure enough it played everything I threw at it:

MPEG

DIVX

WMA

(I haven’t tested Quicktime yet)

UPDATE: No Quicktime.

The best part – it only costs $59!

I also picked up Top Gun to add to my 80′s action movie collection.

Yum. All of these movies impacted me when I first saw them so they will always have a special place in my movie-viewing heart. This is also the first time I have seen them in widescreen with 5.1 surround sound and uncut!.

Well you might have noticed my book list on the right and see that I am reading the whole Harry Potter series back to back. I just recently finished Goblet of Fire and the movie came out today and was anxious to see it.

My first impression was that it was a Cliff notes version of the book. They cut so much out that it felt like the movie was on fast forward. I think it was better than the Prisoner of Azkaban though.

Lets see some of the things they left out (there are more but here are the highlights):

Riddle family murders

Bertha Jorkin

Potter at the Dursleys

Mr. Weasley “flooing” to pick up Potter and confronting Mr. Dursley

Winky the house elf

Percy Weasley (Weatherby)

Ludo Bagman

Fred and George’s bet

Team Mascots

Who won the Quidditch World Cup game

Ministry of Magic protecting World Cup

Potter, Weasley, Malfoy’s in box seats

Death Eaters attacking muggles

Weighing of the Wands

Potter resisting Imperio Curse

Bagman and the Goblins

S.P.E.W. and the House-Elf Liberation Front

Return of Dobby

Return of Sirius

The giant spider in the maze

Explanation of Priori Incantatem

Potter giving the Triwizard Cup winnings to Fred and George

Rita Skeeter being able to turn into a bug
